Be Okay With Being Different

WHAT IS THIS EPISODE ABOUT?

In this episode, I rant about why it is SO important to be okay with thinking different.

WHY SHOULD I LISTEN?

I’ll dive into why I think it is _so_ important to be okay with thinking different, being different, and acting different. I am giving you permission to be yourself and do things based on what you want, not someone else’s opinion.

You can’t consume the same content as everyone else on earth and expect to have different thoughts and actions than they do. It doesn’t work that way. If you want different results in your life than the average person, then you must consume different content than the average person. You must intentionally act different than the average person. Your environment, which we talked about on a previous episode, must be different than the average person.

This is a skill you must learn, and one that I struggled with as well at one time. I’ll go into how you can start thinking different so you can really get the most out of life.

EPISODE TRANSCRIPT:

If you’re not okay with being different, you’re going to have a really hard time getting anywhere you want to get in life. You’re going to have a really hard time building the company that you want to build, living the life that you want to live, becoming the person that you want to become and until you are okay with thinking different and being different, it’s always going to be that way.

00:21 You are now entering a new paradigm. So, here was my issue. I want to find the answers to life’s biggest questions. Things like how do I become happy and live with purpose? How do I make more money doing what I love and what does it mean to be truly successful in all areas of life? My name is Josh Forti @joshforti on Instagram and I ask life’s biggest questions and share the answers with you. My goal is to help you find purpose, happiness, and open your mind to new realms of possibility by helping you think differently about everything you do know and understand on this podcast. We think different. We dream bigger and we live in a world without minutes. This is a new paradigm. Welcome to The Think Different Theory.

01:06 What’s going on guys? Welcome back to another episode of the think different theory. My name is Josh Forti and we are on episode number 15, which means because it’s the number five, we’re on a Friday. Friday is the day to day that you’ll be. Well at least this today, the episode drops. Maybe you won’t be listening to it today, but this drops out on a Friday and I’m going to do a rant sash again today. Kinda yell at you a little bit and kind of get you into the mode of being okay with being yourself and being okay with thinking different and being different. Up to this point, I’ve really kind of tried to test different types of content. So this is episode 15. We’ve got 15 episodes out by the way. Thank you so much. The responses that we have gotten are just phenomenal.

01:49 In the first week of the podcast we were averaging over 300 downloads a week. A man, I’m sorry, 300 downloads a day. From that. In the first week we had hundreds of hours of content consumed, so just thank you for that, and moving forward, I’m really trying to, like, from here on out, I am not testing content each day, but I’m trying to kind of test content on a weekly level, meaning that you know, coming forward I really want to build upon concepts, um, in the weeks moving forward. Um, we have one more week of January and one more week until we shift down to three episodes a week rather than five episodes a week. So we’ll see the difference in the shift there. But with those three episodes, I wanted to be very strategic on. I’m kind of building off of concepts and building off of the stories that I’m going through in my life.

02:38 But these first five, or I’m sorry, these first 15 episodes have been very much just testing episodes, putting my thoughts out there and really getting feedback back from you guys. So if you could do me a favor, if you have not sent me a dm yet or even if you have, if you could just hit me up on Instagram after you’ve listened to this episode and just let me know what has been your favorite episode so far and like what has resonated with you the most because what that’s going to do is really allow me to understand what type of content to continue to put out so that you keep consuming it and keep getting the content is going to change your life. We’ve gotten amazing feedback back, literally hundreds of messages on Instagram about this and it’s just so, so cool to see that the movement that is being born right now and being very intentional about this.

03:21 So thank you. Thank you. Thank you for that. But today I want to talk to you about a topic that, really I’ve had to learn to develop myself, I call it a skill. Maybe. I guess it’s a skill, but just a lifestyle or kind of have that mental shift of thinking different and being okay with being different than everybody else out there because this is really easy to say, but it’s, it’s a whole lot harder to not let it affect you and to not fall into the trap of everybody else. Okay. Because one of the things that I don’t think people realize is that even though they might think they’re like weird or like, oh, they’re going to be like, I’m so different than everybody else, or I, I’m not afraid to be different. I’m not afraid to think different.

04:01 Like if you’re acting and thinking and like having the same thoughts and consuming the same information as everybody else, like it actually is really, really hard to think different and be different. All right. And so the first time that I, I, I don’t know, I should take that back. Not the first time. One of the Times that I think this really stuck out to me was probably, I don’t know, maybe nine months ago or so, I don’t remember what it was. I’d have to go back on facebook and looked at the exact status, but I remember posting a status on facebook saying, man, I just looked at the news or like listening to the news for the first time, like major mainstream news and I don’t understand how anybody could listen to that and still remain sane and still remain happy because it’s so negative.

04:42 And my point was in that is it had been like a year probably since I had actually turned on any major news source. So like Fox News, CNN, like any, anything like that. I just, I didn’t consume any of that media. I didn’t consume that information. And it’s funny because growing up my family was very politically involved and very politically informed. My brother, um, ran and, and helped and volunteered on a lot of senate campaigns and congressional races. Even a couple governor campaigns back when I lived in Indiana. So I was very, very informed and watched and consumed a lot of talk radio. Okay. Grew up pretty conservative. Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, um, and also like my parents and my mom and my dad, like both wanted us to be informed. So I consumed a lot of news. Well, when I got into this entrepreneurship space, I’m naturally without even realizing I was doing it.

05:37 I started tuning that stuff out probably because that was what my parents wanted. I was kind of like a rebel and she didn’t want to consume what they wanted me to, but regardless I consumed a lot less of the news and started focusing on things that we’re actually going to better my life. And what I realized was my life got so much better during this timeframe. I didn’t realize how this news was pulling me down and being negative towards me. And then one day I turned on Fox News or CNN. I don’t even know what it was, but I remember sitting there and watching like the updates for like two or three hours that day. And over the course of a day or two. And my brain was so fried by the stupidity of it all, by the negativity of it all by the basically like almost like the hopelessness of it all, but the propaganda that was just being spewed out and I’m not here to, to call out like the political system or say, you know, vote one way or thinking, oh way.

06:30 That’s not what this is about. What I’m saying is, is that mainstream news is messing with your mind and the way that the large majority of the world thinks is screwing you up and you cannot possibly think different and act different if you’re consuming the mainstream type of content on a daily basis. You’ve got to be filling your mind with other things and you’ve got to be okay with it. This is the thing that so many people mess up is they go and they like, they want to be different. They want to like, you know, like have success. They want to go make more money. They want to live a happier life or a more successful life or whatever. But they’re afraid of like, oh, you know, if all of their friends are super politically informed or in the knower in the news, they like, feel like they have to be doing that too.

07:16 If all of their friends or whatever, do you know something, something, something that is important to them if they feel that if they don’t do it, they’re going to be the weird ones out or the odd ones out and they’re not confident enough and you’re not confident enough to just take a stand and be like, yeah, no, I don’t do that. That’s like, that’s just not me. I do this and I’m about this and I’m weird. I’m different. I’m okay with it. I am so okay with who I am and what I stand for and what I do and the type of content that I consume and where I put my focus and energy. I don’t, I don’t have a TV in my house. I have a TV, but I don’t have any form of like cable news or anything like that. I don’t want to consume that.

07:51 Why? Because that’s mainstream media. And we talked about on a prior episode, like the importance of your environment and like, you know, controlling your environment, control this, control her environment. In fact, uh, I believe it was earlier, uh, I think it was last week. Yeah, I think it was last week that we talked about that, uh, in controlling your environment, it’s that same concept when you’re around those type of people, you’re naturally drawn into that. You’ve got to be so okay with being different. You got to be so okay with thinking different and owning it and being like fully okay with yourself. But because so many of you are sitting there comparing yourself to other people or being like, oh, this is what people do. This is what, like, this is normal. Who Cares? And like I’ve, you know, I apply this in all areas of my life.

08:35 Okay. Not just with my friends but with my family, with my loved ones, with my girlfriend, with my business partners and employees. Like if I don’t want to do something or if I think it’s dumb and stupid and that’s not what I want to be about, I just won’t do it. Like I don’t care if it’s what you do, how you dress or do this or whatever. Like that’s not what I do and that’s okay with me. I’m okay with thinking different dressing, different Washington, different types of content reading instead of watching TV, you know, like exercising instead of let me know not the greatest at exercising. So I brushed and use that example but I’m getting there but like being super okay with me and what I want to do in my goals.

09:15 Because when you’re constantly consuming other people’s type of, you know, other people’s content or lifestyle or thought processes and opinions and like being like, oh I have to, I have to do this because that’s what all my friends do. Or just doing things because that’s what everybody else does. I remember back when I first started in entrepreneurship, so many people in a lot of my friends, they would go out to bars every night and they’re like, Josh, like, you know, you never, you never come out and hang out with us. On the weekends, you never do this, you never do that, and I’m like, I know I don’t want to do that. I don’t care about that. I’m not going to do it simply because that’s the thing to do. I would much rather lock myself in a bedroom and learn all about Instagram. Then go out on a Friday night and get drunk and I’m okay with that and a lot of people thought I was weird and a lot of people thought that I was just this crazy person and I was fine with that because I had different goals and different ambitions.

10:08 It doesn’t make me better than them. It doesn’t mean that they’re worse or anything else. We’re all humans. We’re all equal, but it means that I have different priorities than they do and it means that if you want to get to the next level, you’ve got to do the same thing. And I have noticed in my life as time has gone on, the areas that I have slacked in and the areas that I have normalized my life in have been the areas that I have slowed down progress. And then I have not gotten to achieve where I want to achieve. So for those of you that are out there right now that are like, oh man, I don’t think that I can blog because so and so says, well, no, just go do it. Who cares what they think? Who cares what your neighbor thinks or your friend thinks or your boss thinks or this or that.

10:49 Like who cares if you’re not watching TV or not watching the sports game or not seeing the latest movie or the latest trend is something that people think is weird. Who Cares? Right. I remember just recently I deleted social media off my phone and a lot of people like in my world or whatever. We’re like, oh, that’s awesome. That’s cool. You know his plays. But by some of the people that were not in the business world and the success world and the people that I hang out with, they’re like, dude, you’re 25 years old. You don’t have social media on your phone. Like how are you supposed to stay connected with the world? Like I got messages like that back on Instagram and I got messages like that from people on Facebook. This one guy told me, he’s like Josh, and this was in the business world, right?

11:28 Um, he was like, Josh, that’s a stupid idea because if you delete your facebook messenger, that’s the latest one that I just deleted. He’s like if you delete that, you’re going to be giving up thousands and thousands of dollars in business. I make so much money off of business in the DM and if I deleted that I would be giving up. So much of that don’t do that. He actually told me this and I was like, well, that’s cool, but my goals are different than your goals and the way I run business is different than you. So make fun of me all you want, but I don’t care. I’m going to do what I want to do. Right. And I’m not saying be disrespectful. I’m not saying be rude, I’m not saying, you know, call them messed up or weird names or anything like that. Don’t insult them, but like, be okay with being yourself.

12:08 Be Okay with chasing your goal, switch up your environment if you have to do that and just own you and block out everybody else if you like if you have to do weird things, do weird things. Like I do weird things on a day, like basically a daily basis, especially when I got started, like when I first got started in the whole Instagram space or whatever, I would have to write out things like over and over and over again. And I would like to hang them on the wall. And so every day I would get out. When I first started Instagram I would write out the things that I had to do in order to remember them. And so I’d hang them on the wall and I’d go, you know, uh, create Hashtag, analyze them, analyze, and I’d write the process. I like three or four or five times and, and hanging on the wall.

12:53 And then I leave it up there for a day and then I do it the next day and then rang the next piece up and take down the old one and constantly writing it down. Some people were like, why do you, why would you do that? Just hang it up on the wall and leave it there. No, because the active, the active acts of me going out there and actually writing it down every day made me remember it all right, like going out and being weird, optimize your life around what you need to do to accomplish your goals and be so okay with that. Remember that normal in society, okay. Normal is programmed by people that want convenience and ease and is able to happen by people that are trying to sell to people that want that. Like the system is set up to not let you succeed because comfort and ease and what is normal make somebody a lot of money.

13:44 The system is programming you to do the things that you do on a daily basis. For some reason or another, it’s either to make more money or so they can keep track of it or so they can stay organized or whatever and so what is normal in society is what big businesses and companies and the powers that be more or less per se have defined as normal so that they can systemize it so that they can make money off of it so they can grow their power. Now, this is not some conspiracy theory of like, oh, they’re programming your mind or blah, blah, blah. They have. They’re not out to harm you or get you. There are simply out to control like what they can control and so they studied your human habits and they go, oh, you want to be more convenient and comfort here.

14:25 Let’s make it more convenient and comfortable for you. There will be more comfortable. Something is the less you grow in that area and without resistance there no growth. So like just because everybody else does something that is normal or easy or what they say to do it doesn’t mean you have to, don’t go shopping at the mall at the time if you’re, if you’re broken, you’re trying to save money, you’re trying to get ahead just because all your friends go shop at the mall. It doesn’t mean you have to go shop at them all. Just because goes to the movies doesn’t mean you have to go to the movies. Just because all of your friends went to college doesn’t mean you have to go to college. And if they’re like, oh man, like you’re weird, you’re not going to make it because you didn’t go to college.

15:01 Who Cares? It doesn’t matter, your life is your life. And there was a quote by, I think it was Grant Cardone, I said this on an earlier episode that he said, a lot of people say that you know, you only have a one percent chance or a three percent chance of being successful in life. If you start your own business or whatever. Ninety-eight percent of businesses fail. Like you have a 98 percent chance of failing or whatever it is, and he’s like, the way I look at it, I’ve got a 50 percent chance of winning or losing. I either win or I don’t. Fifty-Fifty. I decided that not any statistic, nobody else is going to tell me what to do, but the only way that that’s going to happen is if you’re okay with being yourself, going after your goals, going after your dreams and actually just going out and doing it and not listening to anybody else, not listening to the haters, the critics, the doubters, the people that say you can’t, okay.

15:50 Tune into what you need to listen to to get to where you need to be. Do what you need to do to get to where your goals are at and 100 percent okay with that. Be Okay with thinking differently, be okay with acting differently, being okay with spending your money differently, using your time differently, having different habits, hanging out in different places, consuming different content and for Gosh Sakes, shut off the news. Oh my God. Like if you’re consuming mainstream news every day, you’re frying your brain. There are way better ways to stay educated in that. If you’re like, Josh, how am I supposed to stay up with political events or current world events? If I can’t watch Fox News or I can’t watch CNN, oh my gosh, like, ah, it’s so much like I’m not here to bash and say one’s better than the other. This is all just bad news, like get actual information and be so careful with what you put into your brain because it’s so, so important, like your mind is so precious and the information that you’re putting in there is, is like so, so important to protect that and guard that with everything that you have.

16:51 All right, so be okay with being different. Own it. When someone says you’re weird, go. I know, and I love it. I’ve said that to so many people. My girlfriend calls me weird and she’s awesome. By the way, I’m not making fun of her anyway, but she thinks I’m weird. I’m okay with it. My best friend thinks I’m weird. I’m fine with it. A lot of people were like, Joshua crazy, I know I don’t care. I’m going and I’m doing me and I’m loving life and I’m choosing to be happy and I’m choosing to be optimistic about everything in my life. I’m an engineer, my life how I want it, and you can do the exact same thing and when you become super, super okay with that, guess what happens? You stop. You’re comparing yourself to other people. You stop worrying about what other people think and you go and allow yourself to live your best life and you suddenly go and give yourself so much permission to go take more risks, to go do more things because it’s what you want and like we talked about in the last episode, when you try a bunch of new things, you get smarter and when you get smarter you kind of rise above the noise and let’s be real.

17:49 Some people actually, most people are just kinda dumb. It doesn’t make them bad people, but a lot of people are just dumb because society has kind of program them to be that way. Rise above that. Be Okay with being different, drown out the noise, focus on what you’re doing, and be super, super okay with it. Alright guys, that’s all I got for you today. Another rant session for you. I hope this helped, especially if you’re listening to this on Friday right when it dropped going into the weekend. Maybe you’ve got weekend plans, maybe you’re gonna. Go to the movies. Maybe you’re going to go and I don’t know, hang out at a bar. Is that really the best use of your time? Why are you doing it? Are you doing it because you want to do it or are you doing it because it’s what everybody else does?

18:32 Really, really think about that. All right? Because your life can change drastically with a few changes of your actions. Think different. Think different. Think different. Alright. As always, hustle, hustle, God bless. Do not be afraid to think different. Which is basically the crux of this episode, uh, because those of us who think different are going to be the ones that change the world. I love you all and I will see you in the next episode. Hit me up on Instagram in the DM. Let me know what, uh, what episodes you liked best, what content do you like best so that moving forward we can optimize it and customize it around you. I love you all and I’ll see in the next episode, take it easy [inaudible] piece. Yo, what’s up guys? You’ve been listening to the think different theory with myself, Josh Forti, which I like to call a new paradigm of thinking and real quick, I got a question for you. Did you like this episode? If you did, I want to ask a huge favor. See the biggest thing that helps this podcast grow and that will spread this message of positivity and making the world a better place is if you leave a review or rating and subscribe to the podcast. What that does is it basically tells the platforms that this is out on, that you liked my stuff and that I’m doing something right, so if you could take like three seconds out of your day and subscribe, leave a rating and review, I will be forever grateful for you. Also, I want to hear from you, I want to know your feedback, your ideas, and your questions for future episodes, so be sure to hit me up on Instagram in the DM @joshforti or via email contact@thinkdifferenttheory.com
