WHAT IS THIS EPISODE ABOUT?
This episode is all about “the question of why”. Why do you do everything you do? Why do you eat what you eat, work where you work, say the things you say and want the things you want? When you start asking yourself that question and getting down to the source, everything changes. I did this in my life, and everything changed for me.
WHY SHOULD I LISTEN?
The question of “why” is so important. In fact, if I were ever to write a book, this will probably be the topic of it. I will for sure get to writing it but first, I want to have lived this life a lot longer than I have now. But I know I want to share this concept with you because it was so powerful.
Before I reveal to you specifically what it is, I’ve got to back up and show you how this came about because if I don’t do that, you’ll miss a piece to the puzzle. So let’s back up. I was watching a video by a guy named Sam Ovens. If you don’t know who Sam Ovens he is a successful entrepreneur his video is where it really started change for me. A single video.
In this episode, I’ll dive into how watching this video from Sam Ovens played into a radical change I made in my life and business. Understanding how the underlying why of your mission and simplifying will play into the success you have in life.

In fact, this episode is the concept and the thing that I did that pretty much brought the thing different theory podcasts to life and allowed me to go do it because I actually gave myself permission to go and do the podcast after I went and started doing this particular thing. I want to talk about this and it’s so, so, so important. Anyway, but we’re going to dive into it, but real quick, we’re on episode two – episode one dropped yesterday. And so hit me up on Instagram @joshforti. Love to hear your thoughts back. All right, let’s dive in. So this concept changed my life forever and this concept is one of those things that when I first started, I did not realize that it was going to have this big of an effect on my life. But once I did this, my life changed so drastically that I was like, I don’t know how I like I don’t know how I functioned before this. Like my life was a mess before I started doing this. And this is the question of why now when I say the question of why I don’t mean like Simon’s cynics start with why and lead with your purpose and all that. Those are really good things. Really good topic. Love the book. Love Simon Sinek. Loved that concept. Talk about a lot. Teach it super important, not what we’re talking about here.
The question of why. In fact, if I were ever to write a book, this will probably be the topic of it and I’m going to write one eventually, but I would love to write a book after I have lived this a lot longer than I have now, but I want to share with you because it was so powerful. The question of why is. Well actually before I, before I reveal to you specifically what it is, I got to really back up and kind of show you how this came about because if I don’t do that, I just think that this is a super, super important piece to the puzzle. So let’s back up. I was watching a video by a guy named Sam Ovens. If you don’t know who sam ovens as Sam Ovens is a successful entrepreneur who, I think he’s from New Zealand. I think that’s where he’s originally from.
Anyway, moved to America, lives in New York. Maybe it lives in California now. I don’t know. He has a consulting company. Very, very smart dude. I think last I heard his consulting company does between like 30 and $50, million dollars a year in revenue, so he’s cranking some cash, very successful and I follow Sam for business advice, but more importantly, mindset advice. All Right, Sam obviously has a very successful company, but how he communicates and talks to you about mindset is fascinating and I’ve learned a lot through that. And so sam has this high level mastermind. It’s like $30,000 a year I think to be in a pretty high level stuff. And that was watching a video of him speaking at this event and he was talking about the importance of like lifestyle and schedule and structures and how to eliminate distractions. And he was talking about how entrepreneurs typically, and this is true for all of us, whenever we have a project that we need to do, we tend to like go find a million other things to do except for that project.
Oh, the dishes need to be done. Oh, the laundry needs to be done. Oh, the, the, you know, the floor needs to be vacuumed. Oh, like whatever, right? Uh, something, something comes up and we get distracted and we don’t spend the appropriate amount of time that we need to be spending on these projects, on the actual project. And so he was talking about eliminating the source of distractions. All right? So when you have a distraction and you are, become aware that this is a distraction, you don’t just not do the distraction or like remove the distraction, you actually have to eliminate the source of the distraction. So if you’re getting distracted by Netflix and you just turn it off, that’s not eliminated in the source, eliminating the source, would it be to go through and actually cancel your netflix account and get rid of it?
And if you’re still finding yourself getting distracted by TV or whatever, then get rid of the TV, right? Go and continue to eliminate it until you get to the source of your distraction and get rid of it. And this concept was very interesting to me because I started applying it and started working. I realized that I was getting very, very distracted and it at the time, I should give you some context here. At the time that I was listening to this video, I was at a point in my life where I was getting very distracted. I was not making the money that I want it to be making consistently. I’d have a really good month and then it have a really bad month. Right? I’d go from making you a really good 30, 40, 50, $60,000 launch till like making five or $10,000 the next month. Right.
All of the place. My mindset was all over the place, but my organization was also all over the place and I was getting distracted like really really a lot and I was frustrated because even though I was positive, I was still frustrated. I was still upset and I could not figure out how to get ahead. So I was watching this to try to figure out how to fix my mindset and stop getting distracted and stay focused more. And so as I watched this, I was like, well, I’m going to try this. So I did so 12 trash bags and two trips to the goodwill later clean out a bunch of stuff out of my house. And by the way, I’m not really a minimalist, but I don’t have a lot of stuff that’s not effective for business just because I don’t need it. But I started noticing this pattern.
It really started working. I started getting less distracted. I started getting more done and so I started thinking about the concept of what he was talking about, of finding and eliminating the source. And I said, Huh, if I knew the source of where everything was coming from or why I was doing what I was doing, then I could really determine whether or not I needed that source in my life. And if I could find the source of all things bad or distracting or holding me back and get rid of them and keep the things that were good then well my life would be way better and I could basically accomplish whatever I want to accomplish. And so I started asking myself the question of why. And so here’s where the question of why I came about. The question of why is simply why do you do everything that you do?
Why do you wake up when you wake up? Why do you go to bed when you go to bed? Why do you want success? Why do you want fame? Why do you drive the car that you drive? Why do you wear the clothes that you wear while you hang out with the people that you hang out with? Why do you say the things that you say? Everything. All right. Ask yourself the question of why and continue to ask yourself the question of why until you find the source. And so I did this and so I started going and let me tell you. At first, I just thought, man, this is gonna be a simple little project. I’ll knock it out in a day. I asked myself some important questions. No, no, no, no, no. If you’re going to do this, just be prepared that if you’re.
If you’re going to do this right, you’ll probably gonna annoy the crap out of. If you’re living with someone like your significant other, if you’re married or you know you might annoy the crap out of them. So you gotta like give them a heads up like, hey, I’m going to do this because this is an intense process, but it changed my life so drastically. If there’s one thing that I would say it changed my life more than anything, it’s this and that I recommend to other people. If you want to change your life, how the success you want, have the whatever you know, whatever it is that you want, this is what you do. So here’s how this works. Why do I want fame? Why do I want money? And I started asking myself that question and at first I started out like at the very, very beginning, I started out with asking myself the question of why was I unhappy and we’re going to get into this more in the next episode, talking about what the core root cause of my unhappiness was.
Comparison and social media. Hint, next episode. Stay tuned for that. It’s gonna be amazing. Episode three. I started tracing everything back and it started like I didn’t start with necessarily or I didn’t start figuring out what the big things. Sometimes it took me figuring out small things first to realize that, oh my gosh, this could work at a bigger level. So first thing that I did ask myself the question of why was it so hard for me to get up in the morning? I am not an early bird at all. Okay. I hate the mornings and so one of my goals is I want to be able to get up at a decent time. I don’t get out of bed some mornings to like 10 or 11. Alright. It’s bad. And I would go to bed at like 4:00 at night or 4:00 in the morning and at night I guess the night before.
And so I was like, okay, why? Why is it so hard for me to get up in the morning? And I would trace it back and I go, okay, well it’s probably pretty hard because I’m tired and I’m tired because I don’t go to bed until 4:00 in the morning. Why don’t I go to bed until 4:00 in the morning? Well, I like to think that I do my best work, you know, between like midnight, one midnight to. Well if I finished up work at two, I can still be a bad by two. So why don’t I go to bed at two? Well, I realized that during that time I drink a lot of caffeine. I don’t drink a lot of caffeine. Why don’t you know, why do I go and do this? Oh man, I don’t eat that great. And so my diet, because there’s not a lot of structured my diet, I go and I eat bad.
It keeps me up late at night. I usually eat a bunch of junk before I go to bed anyway. Okay. So why do I eat unhealthy? Yes. Unhealthy. Because it tastes good. We’ll do. I like healthy food. Well yeah. There’s some healthy food that I like. So why don’t you do that? Was not convenient. Why isn’t convenient? Well, because it takes time to make. So how do I go and make it more convenient and make it easier to make. And so I traced it all the way back to that. Now I have not mastered my eating healthiness yet, but I just wanted to try this and so I literally went to the store and I went and bought like red peppers and salad and lettuce and a bunch of different healthy things and I cut caffeine out of my diet pretty much. I don’t drink very much caffeine at all anymore and I started realizing that simply by going and changing my diet.
I couldn’t believe this when I. When it first happened by going and changing my diet even just slightly to where I didn’t eat super unhealthy things before bed. I started going to bed earlier and waking up earlier. I rarely am until 4:00 in the morning anymore, but when I go to bed I am now usually in bed between like 1230 and 1:00, which for some people super late, but for me this is like three hours earlier than when I used to go to bed. I used to not get out of bed till 11. Most days I’m going to bed by eight Y, eight, 8:30. Why? Because I changed the core root thing that was causing me to wake up late and it went all the way back to my diet. All right, so it’s like, okay, what other things in life? And so I started asking myself the question of why was I unhappy?
Now there’s not one root cause. Sometimes there’s a lot of root causes in the question of why am I unhappy? There was multiple things. The biggest was comparison for me, the biggest cause of me being unhappy with because I was comparing myself to others and I was like, why do I compare myself to others? Well, because I’m on social media all the time. Why am I not supposed to be all the time? And I kept tracing it back, tracing it back, just get back. There’s a reason and we’re gonna get into this. Like I said on the next episode, but I only follow three people on instagram. There’s a reason that I don’t have any social media apps on my phone because that was causing me to be so unhappy. It was causing me to compare myself to other people. It was causing me not to have the success that I wanted.
It was causing me so many things and so I started going and I started asking myself the question of why and I haven’t nailed this down perfectly. This is a constant process and I’m sure I will be doing it for the rest of my life, but I’m like, all right, why do I ate the cereal that I eat? Why do I like the things that I like to eat? Why do I say the words that I say I used to like, so I’m a Christian and I’m not a big huge swearer. I don’t cuss a whole lot anymore, but I used to cost a lot and I didn’t grow up like my parents don’t swear. I didn’t grow up in like a very swearing family and so I started asking myself the question. I’m like, okay, why do I swear? And I’m not going to get into a debate of whether swearing is right or wrong here, but I want to.
I’m trying to prove the point of what this is. Why am I swearing? Oh, swearing this. Okay. That led from this, that stem from this that’s done from this, and I did this in all areas of my life and I started tracing these things back. Why did I buy the things that I bought? Why did I want to be famous? This was super big. Okay, this one is something that I really encourage you to think about. Why are you doing what you’re doing in your career? I mean, you’ve got to be super self aware by the way, this project process that you’re going to go through, if you do this, it’s not going to be easy because in order for this to be effective, you’ve got to actually be very honest with yourself and in order for you to be honest, you have to be very self aware.
Self aware and honesty is not an easy thing. You got to admit to yourself that you’re doing some things wrong. You got to admit to yourself that you got to make some major changes. It was a very hard process for me. Okay, but ask yourself the question, why are you doing what you’re doing in your career right now? Now for me, I’m an entrepreneur, I do not have a job. I work for myself and I started asking myself this. I was like, Why am I coaching? Why am I on social media? Why do I want to be famous? Why am I after money? Why am I doing all these things? And so I started asking, okay, like, why am I on social media? Well, I want to be famous hole. Why don’t want to be famous quote, because fame money, you know, that’s success. Well, okay, but why do you think, why do you want to be successful?
I want to be successful because I wanna help others. Well then his success, money and fame. Well, no. Well then why are you chasing after those things? I don’t know why. Get back down to it. Get back down to it. Okay, well cool. Well I want to be successful and famous, but why am I doing social media? Why is social media my route to that? Well, uh, I don’t know. Is that really what I want to do? And I’m trying to create this kind of confused state right now in my life over this audio so that you could see that my brain was confused. It was a bunch of back and forth questions and this is what will happen is your brain will get all confused. I really encourage you to have like a whiteboard or a pen and paper or something to write things down on so that you can organize this cause it’s gonna be difficult.
But I started asking myself these questions and I realized that a lot of what I was doing I was simply doing because that’s just what naturally came next. It’s what everybody else was doing. It’s what I thought would make me the most money or get me ahead fastest or whatever that thing was. And very few things that I did were actually what I wanted to do. They came and stemmed from what somebody else told me to do subconsciously or what I thought was the next right thing. Or as I thought the thing that was going to impress somebody else, impress my family or my friends or you know, other people in the industry, things of that nature and I had to get really, really real with myself. I mean like really real because here was the problem. This was one of the biggest things that I ran into when I asked myself this question of like in the career space, like why I was doing when I was doing, I have quite a few eyeballs on me, alright, like probably give or take right now, at least 100,000, right between my social media platforms or whatnot of people that know who I am and then a core base of, I don’t know, maybe 10,000 people or so that actually follow me on a somewhat consistent basis and I’ve told them, this is what I’m going to do.
This is what I’m doing. I’m going to be super successful at this. If you have a successful online course, that is the definition of success because it’s the highest profit margin with the least amount of work and this and that or whatever. Agency work suck and I bashed on them before, you know, like all these different things that I’ve said and I realized that I said all those things, not because that’s what I actually thought necessarily, but because that’s what the industry told me. That’s what the collective society as a whole told me, not because that’s what I believed. That’s not what made me happy. It’s not what I actually wanted to do. And so I sat down and I’m not saying that I hate social media. I do love it and I love what I do, but within the space of how I was going about doing it was very much dictated on what other people thought.
So I’d get real honest with myself and I had to make a big change and it’s not out yet, but we’ve hinted at it. Two thousand 19 major changes in my life. Major changes and I had to make this decision to go and basically stop everything that I was doing because I was like, why am I going out there and canceling. I remember canceled. There’s one client that I loved, loved working with. I was like, I’m not going to do agency work anymore because agency work is blocked, canceled it. So while I do that, I have no idea. I wanted to start vlogging awhile ago and I wanted to start a podcast a while ago. Never did it. Why? Because that’s not the thing that I was supposed to do according to who and so I went and started asking myself these questions. I became aware and I trace things back to the source and I either eliminated the source or I doubled down on the things like on the source that made me happy and did the things that I want.
Remember when you asked yourself the question of why you’re not always going to find a negative answer, sometimes the reason that you wake up at maybe you know you’re super disciplined. You wake up at 6:00 AM every morning. Maybe you do that because you love it, continue doing it, but the things that you don’t love, the things that are negative, the things that you shouldn’t be doing in your life. Get rid of those things and doubled down on the things that you should be doing and do what makes you happy. Do it is going to drive what you want to do forward and don’t let somebody else dictate your life. Because most of you and I know this was true for me, you right now probably don’t know why you do half the things that you do or more. It’s just a matter of that’s what we do.
So what I do, so I want to. I want to encourage you to go through that and kind of do this in your life. Ask yourself the question of why it was what allowed me to start this podcast because I realized that the reason I was not starting this podcast is because I was afraid of what somebody else might think. I was afraid that it was going to distract me from my grand goal of being a millionaire and a blah, blah, blah. And that was going to slow me down, but I realized that that goal was me chasing money was me chasing status was me. Chasing fame was me chasing things that did not matter and that did not make me happy. And I started this podcast because it makes me happy. I like talking. I like sharing what I’m learning with people. I like helping people, and so why am I doing this podcast?
If you’re like, Josh, why are you doing the podcast? I’m doing this podcast because I feel that this is the best way for me to get my voice out on a consistent, in a consistent way. I feel that this is the opportunity where people are shifting to right now. I enjoy doing this. Why do I care about people? Because I believe that I was put on this earth to glorify God and make the world a better place and share my message with the world, right? Tracing all those things back to the source and finding what makes you happy. Finding what you love to do and doubling down on those things. Absolutely crucial. Absolutely Bagel. So ask yourself the question of why, when I first started, I used my phone to write the things down and I quickly realized that it was going to be much more complex than that and I started with and then I moved to a legal pad and then my whiteboard and started taking pictures of everything and maybe you want to keep a running track of this.
Maybe it’s something that you just are constantly in your head reminding yourself of, but please understand that a large source of your unhappiness, a large source of the reason that you’re not like happy with where you’re at or what you’re doing, or the reason that you can’t get to where you want to be or understand what you want to understand or feel trapped is because you don’t understand why you’re doing something and if you just identified the source and really understood why you could either eliminate it, tweak it or doubled down on it so that you could get where you want it to be in life. If you have questions on this, please feel free to hit me up on instagram @joshforti. I want to hear back from you. This is so important. This will change your life. It changed my life drastically and I’m very excited to kind of explore this concept as these podcasts go on.
In the next episode tomorrow we’re gonna. Talk about comparison and comparison on social media. How that came about was through this question of why, because I started asking myself why I was unhappy and I started asking myself why was I comparing myself so much because I realized that I was unhappy because of comparison, so I just kept asking myself until I figured out what the source was and then I got rid of it. I’m very excited, so make sure to stay tuned for tomorrow’s episode that will also change your life. Shocking statistics by the way, in that episode. All right.
